Concept behind 'Mobile Fusion'

Tim and I aimed to convey the idea of technology being a means of unification both in reality and in a virtual sense (represented by the special effects within our film). The characters that the film revolves around become connected via there cellphone and computer, and as this connection becomes stronger it takes on a surreal and mystical form . The characters literally become swallowed by their own technology as they are enveloped into a void of ‘virtual space’ where they eventually become united.

What Tim had to say about the special effects.:

The Photoshop effects are used where required to demonstrate the presence of this communicative energy. Although it’s a form which doesn’t really exist in a physical sense, it’s still a very powerful, invisible energy in our world. Using the digital mediums, we unlocked and inspired it to take on this elegant, magnificent form, wrapping itself around reality and taking people into its realm.

There’s then a sequence depicting the two in this backwards realm, they exist as silhouettes, shadows, avatars of themselves. They are an extension of their own selves, and of reality. They’re linked to their true selves through using this Photoshop energy; the blue and green colours which envelop them, that same enegry winds up defining them. They run together, the energies becomes more furious as they get closer, and they collide.

The end is left to the viewer. The white screen flares, you are left to interpret it how you will. You’ve seen the characters, you see them connect, and you see them come together. Nothing more is required to portray this idea of communication, and I think any addition material would cheapen this effect.

Mobile in both a telecommunication and a travelling sense; fusion relates to the character unification that happens within our film thanks to mobile technology.

I chose this track for our video as it is one of At the Drive-In’s most powerful and intense songs…it matches the hectic nature of our video and helps convey several concepts within the film.

- Edit shots to form a reasonably coherent series of images that accurately convey our theme.

Handed footage that requires special effects over to Tim…then took off down to the local Star Mart to stock up on energy supplements for him (No-Doz and Demon Energy). He doesn’t envisage getting any sleep which is probably an accurate assumption…I fear for his sanity.

We now have the opening sequence filmed…which allows Tim to start working on the special effects required for the ‘character envelopment’ that happens due to ‘communicative energy’.

Shots still required.:

- Computer scene…sequence that establishes second character at his computer.

Animation required.:

- Envelopment of both characters due to ‘communicative energy’ (photoshop magic *Tim)

- Stickmen sequence…once characters are engulfed they become virtual representations of themselves…silhouettes characters that eventually become reunited.

Diary Entry #001, June 11th 2009

While filming in a seedy back alleyway, deep in the heart of Wellington’s ‘mean’ streets with Tim; we were approached by two friendly chaps offering various illicit substances for purchase. Because of our commitment to this project however, we declined their offer.

- Fade in from black…camera moves down alleyway (establishing shots of 1st character), camera rotates around him and stops on cellphone - displaying title of film Mobile Fusion.
- Character 1 sends txt message to character 2…camera takes off down alleyway (representing travel of ‘message’), travel continues up staircase and along balcony (searching for it’s destination). Camera pans upwards to sky.
- Camera pans back down from sky…travels down ‘driveway’ and zooms in on a dark basement window.
- Camera (still representing message in motion) travels in window *light comes on…camera establishes 2nd character at computer.
- Character 2 recieves message and becomes engulfed in ‘communicative energies’ (photoshop effects - green tint), then becomes a virtual representation of himself as he is swallowed.
Fade to black…fade continues into next sequence.
- Character 1 becomes ‘connected’ to character 2 and is also engulfed with ‘communicative energies’ (photoshop effects - blue tint), once swallowed he becomes a virtual representation of himself.
- Stickmen sequence…both character are now ‘virtual’ and start their journey towards each other.
- Characters become united….? (Still thinking about best way to achieve this effect).

Characters (location) -> Technology (means of communication) -> communication coming to life -> Abstraction of human form; representing their transport via communication -> final meeting; conclusion.

Initial concepts for film.:

- Travel via technology (Real/virtual travel due to characters being ‘connected’ through mobile phones,computers etc.).
- Motion through telecommunication.
- United through technology/telecommunication (Characters spread out over different locations being united by various means of communication…unification could be real or virtual).
